Once the bones got ashore, we needed to clean them - and fast!  They were covered with a greasy, white film that needed to be scrubbed off with dish detergent, scrub brushes, tooth brushes and elbow grease.  So volunteers were drafted, from the staff and from participants, and the cleaning process was begun.

First, all the loose bones were placed in this seawater bath with bleach in it.   They were left there for about a week, then one by one were taken out and scrubbed by hand with dish detergent.

The bones were then left on top of the boat locker to let the sun and air do their work of bleaching and drying them out.
