About us
MarineLab is a marine science education organization located in Key Largo, Florida. Since 1985, we’ve been offering immersive educational experiences that bring students, educators, and families face-to-face with the incredible marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys. Our programs specialize in seagrass beds, mangrove forests, and coral reef habitats, providing a comprehensive understanding of marine science through both field-based exploration and classroom learning.
At MarineLab, we focus on hands-on learning that connects participants to the ocean, teaching the importance of conservation and the role each individual can play in protecting marine environments. From our award-winning coral restoration programs in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory to our shark research expeditions, our initiatives engage participants in real-world conservation efforts. We aim to inspire the next generation of marine scientists and environmental stewards by offering experiences that are as educational as they are exciting.
Marine Resources Development Foundation (MRDF)
Founded in 1970 by Ian Koblick in the US Virgin Islands, Marine Resources Development Foundation (MRDF) has over 50 years of experience in undersea research and marine science education. MRDF pioneered underwater habitats and marine training programs, contributing to the advancement of ocean research, environmental policies, and underwater technology. Since relocating to Key Largo in 1984, MRDF has expanded its mission to include hands-on education, offering unique programs that inspire a deeper understanding of marine science and conservation.
MarineLab Undersea Laboratory
From 1985 to 2018, the MarineLab Undersea Laboratory was located in a lagoon at MRDF’s campus in Key Largo. During its operational years, the laboratory hosted hundreds of aquanauts—ranging from students to medical researchers—who stayed overnight in the Undersea Lab. In 2018, the laboratory was raised from the lagoon and restored to its 1985 condition. Today, the Undersea Laboratory serves as a museum where visitors can climb inside the habitat and experience what it was like for aquanauts to stay underwater, all while remaining dry.
Jules' Undersea Lodge & Gift Shop
Located in the lagoon at Key Largo Undersea Park, Jules' Undersea Lodge is the world’s only underwater hotel, where scuba diving is required to access the rooms. In addition to overnight stays, the lodge provides a SCUBA training location within its lagoon, offering courses like Open Water certification and Discover SCUBA Diving. Jules’ is transitioning to be managed by MarineLab, with its focus shifting to guided tours of the underwater habitat, showcasing the history and technology behind underwater living, while continuing to host undersea research missions.
Our mission
To inspire and empower individuals through marine education to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ocean, championing its exploration and conservation.
Our Programs
-
Marine Science Education
Immersive, field-based learning experiences where students explore the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys. Through snorkeling, data collection, and research, students engage directly with seagrass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs. Led by expert instructors, our programs provide an interactive and exciting way to learn about marine science in the field.
-
Teacher Workshops & Professional Development
We empower educators to integrate marine science into their curriculum through engaging workshops and practical learning experiences. Our professional development programs provide teachers with the tools and resources they need to bring marine ecosystems into the classroom. Teachers participate in field-based activities, explore marine habitats, and gain knowledge that can be directly applied to enhance student learning about the ocean.
-
Family Days
Our Family Days offer families the chance to explore local marine habitats through involved science activities and snorkeling excursions. With guidance from our marine biologist staff, participants will engage in labs on land and enjoy boat trips to various locations in the Keys.
-
Summer Camp
Our summer camps provide a week-long experience filled with marine science labs, snorkeling excursions, and meals. Campers will explore the ocean, learn about marine ecosystems, and gain a greater understanding of the importance of marine conservation.
-
Virtual Programs
Our Virtual Programs bring the wonders of marine science directly to students, even when they can’t be on-site. Through interactive online lessons, participants explore marine ecosystems, learn about ocean conservation, and engage in live discussions with our expert marine biologists.
-
Marine Research & Conservation Initiatives
The Coral Restoration Program, in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory, teaches students to restore coral reefs through hands-on fieldwork. The Shark Research Program, in collaboration with Ocean First Institute, provides students with the opportunity to learn shark research techniques, including sampling and data collection, while on the water.
