Caribbean Teacher Initiative

Many people are unaware that MarineLab’s organizational roots are in the Caribbean!  Our parent organization Marine Resources Development Foundation was founded in the US Virgin Islands in 1970.   We conducted research projects there and in Puerto Rico through the early 1970s, including the landmark Puerto Rico International Undersea Laboratory project which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Even though we’ve been firmly planted in Key Largo since 1984, we still have deep ties to our Caribbean neighbors.   Thanks to a generous donation from the Ocean Conservation Education and Exploration Foundation, we launched the Caribbean Teacher Initiative this past summer.   Nine teachers from seven different Caribbean nations received a full scholarship to our summer teacher workshop this past summer! After participating together, these teachers are now networked and share ideas, resources, and best practices with each other across the deep blue boundaries that separate their nations while uniting their ecosystem.

Pictures are better than words, and video is even better than pictures, so enjoy the video that we made about our Caribbean Teacher Initiative.

Help us offer scholarships to more Caribbean teachers by making a donation today!
