Instructors Bring the Passion!

Rachel Carrier, Director of Operations

It’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, and the water is calm. It’s a DREAM DAY for a MarineLab Instructor. As the boat is gliding over the crystal-clear blue Florida Keys water, you see a turtle’s head pop up for a breath of air. Your students on the boat gasp in amazement as they see a sea turtle for the first time. Those are the best days.

The allure of working at MarineLab is getting to snorkel each day in the glorious Florida Keys marine habitats while inspiring young students to love and protect the ocean. Sounds amazing, right? But not every day gives you a sea turtle to show off. Instructors work hard to make sure each student is impacted by the ocean no matter what the weather is!

MarineLab instructors bring life to our programs. Underneath their sparkling personalities they have a diverse set of skills and qualities that guarantee success: flexibility, positive attitude, passion, being a team player, stamina, and the ability to engage and connect with students.

From day 1, we tell our instructors that their days will never go as scheduled. There are so many aspects to each program at MarineLab that things don’t always work out perfectly every day. When things change we just keep rolling with plan B, C or D!   We have so many snorkeling and program options that whatever each day brings we know our students will still have an amazing time.  Our instructors learn really fast that the students feed off of their energy. If things are different from what the students were expecting but they still see an excited, positive instructor they are going to be ready to have fun no matter what their expectations were.

A typical day for a MarineLab Instructor is a morning boat trip, a meal shift, an afternoon boat trip, and two lessons after dinner. Any instructor will tell you that the long days are the hardest part of the job, even while they’re rewarding. Instructors usually have a smile on their face from morning until night. How do they do it?

Passion. Instructors are extremely passionate about our marine habitats. They get to show and inspire our future generations that the ocean is a beautiful, important place. A must have environment for our world. They get to bring excitement and joy to students every day. Whether it’s watching a student see a crab fall out of a rock as they shake it or witnessing the JAW DROPPING expression on a student’s face when they see 17 eagle rays swimming right underneath them at the reef.

Here at MarineLab you will find the most energetic, passionate, talented people who truly want to make an impact on the future generations and our oceans. We work hard, but it’s SO worth it.

What does it take? Come find out!  We are hiring Seasonal Instructors for our Fall 2022 season.
